HE Finance Plus 2013/14 shows that the total income of higher education providers in 2013/14 was £30.7 billion. Funding bodies provided £6.1 billion of this income, while tuition fees and education contracts contributed £13.7 billion.

HESA publication 'Staff in Higher Education 2013/14' released today
Staff in Higher Education 2013/14 shows that there were 194,245 academic staff employed at UK higher education providers (HEPs) on 1 December 2013 and 201,535 non-academic staff.
Demand grows for Biology, Business and Maths degrees
Data published today show that 521,990 students started first degree courses at UK HE providers in 2013/14. This is 5% higher than in 2012/13, but still 5% lower than in 2011/12 - the last year before the £9,000 fee cap was introduced. 15% of students starting degrees in 2013/14 were in the Business and administrative studies subject area.

This Statistical First Release (SFR) has been produced by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) in collaboration with statisticians from the UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), the Welsh Government (WG), the Scottish Government (SG) and the Department for Employment and Learning Northern Ireland (DEL(NI)). It has been released according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority. This is the first release of data from the 2013/14 HESA Staff record. The release provides details of staff employment at UK Higher Education providers (HEPs) on 1 December 2013. It has been produced in partnership with the UK administrations and is released in accordance with the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

HE staff data: Summary of 2013/14 contract data
There were 396,000 staff employed at UK HE providers in 2013/14, of whom 194,000 (49%) were academic staff.
The graphic below attempts to display some of the key characteristics of staff contracts across the sector, as well as displaying the gender split among different types of contracts. The table below the graphic provides the numbers for each breakdown.
Press ReleaseInternational students: Non-UK domiciled students studying in the UK
In 2012/13 there were 425,265 non-UK domiciled students studying at UK HE providers. This was a fall in numbers from 435,235 the year before following a continuous year-on-year rise since HESA started collecting data in 1995. Unsurprisingly the highest numbers of students came from the world's two most populous countries, China and India.
