HE Provider Data: Business and Community Interaction – open data release
The Higher Education - Business and Community Interaction (HE-BCI) survey gathers data on UK universities' engagement in the economy and the wider application of their work.
The data show 3,920 new spin-off and start-up companies founded by graduates in 2019/20, a rise of 2% from the 2018/19 figure. These new companies contribute to a total of nearly 14,000 active graduate start-up firms employing an estimated 35,679 people (full-time equivalent).1
2,027 new patents were granted to HE providers in 2019/20, an increase of 9% on the previous year. UK HE providers now hold a total portfolio of 23,613 patents of which 10,123 are held overseas.2 Total revenues from intellectual property for the sector stood at £295 million in 2019/20.3
Other sources of income recorded in the survey include Collaborative research involving public funding which rose by 2% to £1.7 billion and Contract research which rose 6% to £1.4 billion.4
