All date fields in the Student Alternative record must be completed using the ISO8601 format of YYYY-MM-DD. The specification of this field falls within the scope of the Aligned Data Definitions and follows the Data Standards in the HESA Student Alternative record. This field is mandatory. If, in exceptional circumstances, the date of birth is not known, an empty element should be returned with neither characters nor spaces within it: <BIRTHDTE></BIRTHDTE> HESA monitors the number of unknown birth dates submitted by each provider. For students entering through UCAS this information will be available from UCAS via the *J transaction. Information relating to age is asked in order to monitor equality, diversity and inclusion in the higher education sector and support institutions in meeting their obligations under the Equality Act 2010. |
