Standard Definition
The HESA population at 1 December is a headcount of all active student instances as at 1 December of the reporting period.
The 1 December HE population includes all higher education student instances as at 1 December except:
1. dormant student instances (those who have suspended studying but have not formally de-registered)
2. incoming visiting and exchange student instances, and students whose location of study is primarily outside the UK, but student has spent or will spend more than 8 weeks in the UK
3. postdoctoral student instances
4. instances where the whole of the programme of study is outside of the UK
5. National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) student instances
6. students on sabbatical
7. writing-up students
8. students who left their instance prior to 1 December, or who commenced a programme of study after this date, and
9. the 'wrapper' programme aim of Apprenticeship Standards students.
This derived field is created in both the Student record (Cyy051) and the AP student record (Cyy054). The AP student record makes use of fields from a rolled-up Instance_End analysis table which reflects the position of the student in the last active instance period.
As the AP student record is collected for a smaller subset of those collected in the Student record, the Technical Specification is less complex and requires fewer exclusions.
HE levels are defined as first letter of Course.COURSEAIM = D, E, L, M, H, I, J, C.
FE levels are defined as first letter of Course.COURSEAIM = P, Q, R, S, X
Incoming visiting and exchange students are excluded from the population in order to avoid an element of double-counting that would occur with both outgoing and incoming students being included in the same population. Students studying primarily abroad (LOCSDY code S, 'Studying abroad and included in the Student record as student has spent or will spend more than 8 weeks in the UK') are excluded on the basis that they are 'incoming'.
For the purposes of the Student record, Instance.EXCHANGE valid entries Y and Z are classed as 'outgoing'.
Technical Specification
(Y1 is obtained by concatenating the first two digits of year from the system date with the first two digits of Institution.RECID, e.g. Y1 = 2001 for 2001/02.)
