Notes | Each contract must have at least one activity, an associated cost centre and a proportion (Activity.ACTSOC, Activity.CCENTRE and Activity.CCPROP). The activity associated with a contract defines the role of the staff member and the cost centre indicates where that activity takes place within the HEI. Further information on Coding activities and cost centres is available under the 'Further guidance' section of the manual. The Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) is a common classification of occupational information for the United Kingdom. Within the context of the classification jobs are classified in terms of their skill level and skill content. Further information on SOC2010, together with a series of coding tools can be found on the SOC2010 section of the ONS website. The CASCOT coding tool has been provided to assist HEIs in allocating SOC codes for their staff. This system allows job titles to be allocated to SOC2010 codes. There is a help guide available to assist in using this system. Once a user has logged in to the HESA Data Collection System, they can access the CASCOT coding tool from the bottom of the page. SOC2010 Major Groups are defined by the first digit of the code. HESA has commissioned a HE specific coding index which is closely based on the Standard Occupational Classification, and which is designed to aid in assigning staff to the relevant codes: Occupational Coding for Higher Education Staff. |
